Geocoin Mania

Seems like geocoins are gaining in popularity. It is amazing how many different ones that are out there. We actually own 3 coins, two Connecticut coins and one personal coin by JeepMTJ. This palls in comparison to the collections that others have accumulated. Many people have hundreds of coins in their collections. There is even a web site called CoinTracking.com where you can see what coins people have in their collections and see what coins they are seeking and what coins they have available for trading. A search on Ebay retrieved 445 coins up for bids. I didn't check all the pages, but I saw one coin that had a current bid of $59. That is quite a lot for a coin that is probably originally cost less than $10. Sounds like an expensive hobby, but hey maybe if you wheel and deal the right coins you just might be able to make a few dollars to spend on geocaching equipment like a new GPS or snowshoes or some other gear for the trails.

It is a craze to be certain. The mania is a bit nonsensical. So few of these coins ever see the bottom of a cache, it is hardly geocaching related.

As for ridiculous prices, a Series 1 Moun10bike coin fetched $1500+.

Further evidence the geocoin makes no sense is this auction. The coin sold for $28. One can purchase a brand spanking new one for $9 from TC.com itself right now. So, someone paid three times the going price. It is ludicrous.
